Even citizens returning to the United States require COVID-19 testing

As of January 26, 2021, the CDC ordered COVID-19 testing required for all air travelers. Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test (or proof they have recently recovered from the virus) prior to boarding. Here are the details you need to know:

  • This applies to all travelers 2 years of age or older.
  • The test must be taken no more than 3 days (72 hours) before your flight into the U.S.
  • Travelers must be tested with a viral test, which includes either the PCR and Rapid Antigen methods of testing.
  • Be sure you will get your results back before your flights. You will have to show documentation of your test results to the airline.
  • You may show a paper or electronic copy of your documentation.
  • If you have recently recovered from COVID-19 (in the past 3 months) and do not have any symptoms, you may be able to avoid testing. Instead, you may show documentation from your healthcare provider stating that you are clear to travel. This is referred to as “documentation of recovery.”
  • This order applies to all commercial, private, and chartered flights entering the U.S. from a foreign country.
  • All passengers regardless of vaccination status must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or documentation of recovery.

For more information on COVID-19 testing requirements, visit the CDC website.

Other travel requirements may exist

Please also consider that your travel destination may have its own requirements for testing and/or documentation required prior to entry. This is especially important when traveling outside of the United States.
