Regensburg to Prague transfer

We loved our AmaWaterways luxury river cruise on the Danube so much that we didn’t want it to end. So, we decided to add on a 2-day extension to Prague in the Czech Republic.

Disembarking a luxury river cruise

If you have previously experienced an ocean cruise, you know that you have to place your bags out the night before and then the day you disembark it is a hurry-up-and-wait scenario. A river cruise disembarkation is very different. It is calm with little waiting around. We placed our bags outside our room at 7 AM on the day of disembarkation. Then we had our last delicious breakfast before heading to the lounge. In the lounge, we only had about 10 minutes to wait before we were called outside to identify our bags to be loaded on the coaches.

Prague is about a 3-hour drive from Vilshofen but to break up the journey up we stopped in Regensburg to have a walking tour and lunch.

Regensburg Walking Tour

Regensburg is a city in southeast Germany where the Danube, Naab, and Regen Rivers meet. It has the largest medieval old town north of the Alps with nearly 1,500 listed buildings (declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014). We started our walking tour by crossing the old stone bridge that was built in the 12th century. As we walked through the old town, we passed Goliathhaus, a former gothic house castle with a large impressive mural of the battle between David and Goliath. The first mural was created around 1573; it has been revised and restored many times during the years. We ended the walking tour at St. Peter’s Cathedral. Construction on the Gothic cathedral started in 1273.

Where to eat

After the walking tour, we had about an hour to find lunch before continuing our journey onto Prague. We decided to try the local cuisine of grilled sausages and sauerkraut at the Historic Sausage Kitchen of Regensburg. It is located at the southern end of the old stone bridge. This is a popular stop for tourists and is a cash-only establishment.

The journey from Regensburg to Prague is about 3 hours. We did have one stop to have a break but most people had a nap.
